How Do I
Apply for a building permit?
Download and complete a building permit application or get a copy of the form at City Hall.
Return the signed permit application to City Hall. It will be reviewed; a fee will be calculated based on the project’s value and you will be notified to come to City Hall or make payment and to pick up your signed permit and placard to post at the job site. Please keep in mind that a building permit must be approved before any work can begin.
Apply for a variance?
Download and complete a variance application or get a copy of the form at City Hall.
Return the signed permit application along with the $50 fee and a list of names and addresses of property owners within 200 feet of your property to City Hall. A public hearing will be set with the Zoning Board of Adjustment to consider your request. Please keep in mind that if a variance is required, the approval of the variance is required before a building permit will be issued and before any work may be begin.
Apply to be on a board or commission?
Download and complete a board & commission application or get a copy of the form at City Hall. Return the application to City Hall. Appointments are announced at City Council meetings.
Apply for special event permits?
Download and complete a special event application or get a copy of the form at City Hall. A property reservation form for community events may also be needed. Return the paperwork to City Hall along with the $25 fee.
To apply to close a City street, use City property or to apply to exceed the noise limits for a special function, you will need to download and complete an event application or get a copy of the form at City Hall. After filling out your application, please return it to City Hall. Each application must be approved by the Maquoketa City Council. Please allow up to three weeks for approval.
Apply for a street or curb cut?
Download and complete a street cut application or a curb cut application or get a copy of the form at City Hall. Return the completed form to City Hall along with a certificate of insurance for the company doing the work and a $500 deposit. The deposit will be used to pay for any street repairs required by the work. Repairs less than $500 will result in a refund, those in excess will result in a bill. Street cut and curb cut applications require approval from the Public Works Director.
Apply for the sidewalk program?
Download and complete a sidewalk program application or get a copy of the form at City Hall. Return the completed form to City Hall. If approved, you may submit a copy of your bill for repair or replacement to City Hall for a partial reimbursement.

Bring in a copy of the pet’s vaccinations along with a photo to City Hall, complete the application form and pay the applicable fee. Dogs and cats are required to be licensed at six months. When relocating to Maquoketa, owners have thirty days to license their pets. Pet licenses are renewed annually in November.

Submit a Street Light Outage form. Maquoketa Municipal Electric Utility will take the appropriate action to make sure the light is replaced in a reasonable amount of time.

How do I bring a topic to the council’s attention?
Each City Council agenda has an audience section near the beginning during which audience members are allowed to address the Council. To have a specific item included on the agenda, please contact Maquoketa City Hall by noon on the Wednesday prior to the Council meeting.

How do I reserve a camping space at Horseshoe Pond?
Horseshoe Pond campsites are on a first come, first serve basis. Campers register when they arrive. The rates for all sites are $17/day or $105/week.
How do I reserve a sport field?

Sign up for water and sewer service?
Download and complete an application for water service or get a copy of the form at City Hall. Return the signed application to City Hall; we will make a copy of your driver’s license and require either a $100 deposit or a letter of credit. The letter of credit must be for at least one year of service from a previous utility company, and you must have paid on time for the entire year. In addition, we may need to set up an appointment for us to read your utility meter.

Sign up to suspend water service during a long absence?

Return the signed application to City Hall; we will schedule an appointment to have City Water Department Personnel shut off the water. If you do not want the water meter removed, you must sign a waiver at City Hall relieving the City from any liability from damage that might occur. The water service reconnection fee is $20.

Is there a place to haul yard and garden waste?
Residents within the City may use the Birch Drive brush site to drop off yard waste, grass clippings and tree branches as long as the branches are no greater than 6″ in diameter. Anyone who provides lawn care services for a fee is allowed to use the brush site to dispose of grass clippings and chipped material only. Anyone who provides tree care services for a fee is restricted from using the site, except to dispose of grass clippings.
Are pet licenses required?
Every owner of a dog or cat over six (6) months old shall procure a license from the City of Maquoketa on or before the 1st day of November each year, or within thirty (30) days of the animal being brought into the City, or when the animal has reached six (6) months of age.
